Information Security Incident (suspicion of unauthorized access)

On December 28, 2015, we confirmed that on December 27, 2015 a large quantity of spam mails were sent out and a server automatically shut down email transactions.

Afterwards, it became clear that the server in question was the file server for the Career Center of the University. Upon inspection and verification of the log file and other records, on January 4, 2016, it became clear that the server had communicated with an undetermined number of outside servers; measures were taken, and this server was isolated from the network.

The server housed personal information pertaining to HU students as well as company contacts. Information on 18,000 current students, 95,000 alumni, and 2000 companies’ contact information, for a total of approximately 110,000 persons was on this server.

Due to the possibility of data leakage, the University is currently thoroughly investigating the matter. We have also launched an investigation to check on the security management of other servers within the University.

At this time, there is no confirmation concerning secondary damage, but as a precaution, we have reported the incident to the police.

Along with this apology on the web, we are sending a letter to our students and companies concerned explaining the facts and situation with our heartfelt apologies.

We deeply regret what has happened and for causing any distress to all concerned parties. The University is determined to work harder to prevent a recurrence of such an incident by further strengthening our management of personal information security based on this experience.
