October 29, 2020, Hokkaido University joined the United Nations University SDG University Platform (SDG-UP). The platform has been established by the United Nations University Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS) in August, 2020 to strengthen cooperation among universities in Japan centered on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The aim of the platform is to enhance the presence of Japanese universities in the international community and contribute to the sustainable development in Japan as well as the world through collaboration between universities promoting SDGs and stakeholders. Twenty-eight Japanese universities including Hokkaido University participate in the platform.

On August 28, 2020, UNU-IAS held an online symposium to launch the SDG-UP. Panelists included leading experts from the private sector, local government and academia that led discussions on strengthening collaboration between universities in Japan and international organizations. Since then, lectures and workshops have been held regularly to share information on advanced initiatives related to SDGs in Japanese universities and to exchange opinions on inter-university cooperation.

Through this platform, Hokkaido University will continue to promote more active cooperation with other universities and stakeholders.
