Hokkaido University makes ranking gains

Hokkaido University ranked 5th in Japan, 29th in Asia


Hokkaido University’s international university ranking rose in both of the internationally recognized THE World University Rankings and the QS Top Universities ranking systems.


THE ranked Hokkaido University as the 5th best university in Japan, up from 6th last year and tying with Nagoya University in Aichi Prefecture.


In addition, QS ranked Hokkaido University as the 29th best university overall in Asia, up from 31st last year. QS also ranked Hokkaido University as the 7th best university in Japan.


Both ranking systems calculate rankings based on a score system, awarding points on factors such as academic reputation, research output and outcomes, and the university’s number of international students and faculty. For 2019, QS ranked the University of Tokyo as the top university in Japan, while THE bestowed Kyoto University with the top spot.
