Hokkaido University President Toyoharu Nawa met with Sapporo City Mayor Katsuhiro Akimoto to sign the collaborative MICE agreement at a signing ceremony in Sapporo City Hall on September 4, 2018. Standing for Meeting, Incentive Travel, Convention, and Exhibition/Event, the aims of the MICE agreement are to help promote Sapporo as an attractive destination for both international and domestic conferences and conventions, and to raise international brand awareness for both the city and the university.
According to both university and city officials, this is the first agreement of its type between Hokkaido University and Sapporo City. They also mentioned that Hokkaido University was chosen specifically for this agreement because it hosted around half of the conferences held in Sapporo last year. Both President Nawa and Mayor Akimoto, pledged their support to the agreement, with officials from both sides also confirming their commitment to the deal. The MICE agreement will continue until March 31, 2019.
