The Times Higher Education (THE) Japan University Rankings were announced on March 24, 2022. For the third year in a row, Hokkaido University has retained its place as the sixth university in the rankings.

THE Japan University Rankings uses a methodology that measures 16 individual performance indicators grouped under four pillars—Resources, Engagement, Outcomes and Environment—and emphasizes undergraduate education. Hokkaido University has done especially well in the indicators contributing to Outcomes, which measures the academic reputation of universities among Japanese scholars and the reputation of universities among employers. Hokkaido University is now second in Japan, having risen from fourth place in 2021 and seventh place in 2020.

Worldwide, THE World University Rankings 2022 ranked Hokkaido University in the world’s top 501–600 universities. The World Ranking is based on 13 indicators that measure an institution’s performance across four areas: Teaching, Research, Knowledge Transfer and International Outlook.
