Finished Dec 03 2016

Following last year, Hokkaido University students have been given the opportunity to participate in the renowned annual international entrepreneurship competition called the Hult Prize. On Saturday, December 3rd, an intra-university preliminary contest called the “Campus Competition,” will be held at Hokkaido University in which 15 teams (56 participants) will present their business ideas to solve refugee related issues.

The Hult Prize, hosted by the Hult Prize Foundation since 2010, is an annual competition for social entrepreneurship which brings together college and university students from around the globe to solve the world’s most pressing issues. The theme of the 2017 competition is “Reawakening Human Potential – The Refugee Opportunity,” and teams from 227 universities worldwide are expected to present their business ideas. Hokkaido University students participated last year, and this year teams from Japan to participate in the Hult Prize will come from just two universities – Hokkaido University and Tokyo University.

Universities worldwide hold campus competitions to choose the teams which then move on to compete in a regional competition. Finally, the winners of the regional competitions are invited to attend the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) in New York, where 1 million dollars will be awarded to the winning team.

The 56 participants competing in the preliminaries at Hokkaido University are a diverse group, representing over 20 different nationalities. Teams are consisted of 3-4 people, and will come together to solve the social issues surrounding refugees. Four people unaffiliated with the university will be invited to judge the competition and decide which team will be invited to attend the regional competition in America this coming March.

The campus competition will provide Hokkaido University students with the opportunity to engage in an international debate about issues facing today’s society and to help the public familiarize with the topics of refugees and social entrepreneurship.
