President Toyoharu Nawa attends the Japan–China University Fair & Forum

From May 10 to 14, 2018, President Toyoharu Nawa, Presidential Advisor Oh Shuho, and a member from Hokkaido University (HU) visited South China. The main purpose of the visit was to join the Japan–China University Fair & Forum. They also used this opportunity to visit academic institutions in Xiamen and Guangzhou. Overall, the visit strengthened the friendly relations between higher education institutes in Japan and China.


On the first day of their visit, they went to North China Municipal Engineering Design & Research Institute Co. Ltd. in Xiamen, where they met and discussed a variety of matters with Xiamen University (XU) President Zhang Rong.

The next day, they returned to XU to meet with several faculty members, and visited some of the university research facilities. In the afternoon, they visited the Municipal People’s Congress and met with Vice Mayor Zhang Yigong to discuss how to utilize Hokkaido University’s technological capabilities and patent activates in the city.


On the 12th, they travelled to Guangzhou, where they met HU alumni living there. It was a precious opportunity to strengthen the network between the university and its alumni community in China. In the afternoon, President Nawa joined the Japan–China University Fair & Forum. He talked about possible future collaborations with seven universities hoping to collaborate with HU. Furthermore, the university also had a booth at the Forum which was run by HU alumni; it was a great opportunity for the alumni to express their enthusiasm for HU.

On the 13th, Parallel Sessions under two themes were held, one of them which was moderated by President Nawa. The session theme was titled “About a marketing policy of universities which are aiming to be only one university.” Every university took the chance to exchange their opinion and discuss the topic. After the parallel session, they visited “Chen Shi Shu Yuan,” a traditional academic building.



For the final day, they visited more academic facilities, such as the “Guangzhou Higher Education Mega Center”, and met with the President of Guangzhou Maritime University, Zou Cairong (former President of Guangzhou University). They agreed to continue promoting academic collaborations between HU and Guangzhou Maritime University. These collaborations are being made through HU’s Faculty of Agriculture and Graduate School of Environmental Science.
