Regarding a Novel Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) Infected Individual in Hokkaido University
Hokkaido University hereby announces that a staff member of the University tested positive for the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), as of Wednesday 4 March 2020, evening time, and regarding this matter, releases the current information gotten from an interview with the person, etc. and measures taken as the employer so far.
1.) Regarding the gender, age and working place of the infected individual
A male staff in 60s who works at the administrative bureau
(located in N8 W5, Kita-ku, Sapporo)

Wednesday 4 March 2020, evening
3.) Regarding any oversea travel history within a month
There is no oversea travel history for the staff.
4.) Health condition record
Saturday 22 February |

Thursday 5 March | Hospitalized at the National Hospital Organization Hokkaido Medical Centre, with some moderate medical condition and able to have conversations |
5.) Regarding those who had close contact with the infected staff
Based on an interview, etc. with the infected staff, and also his usual activity record on the campus, the University has detected the close contactees in the University, confirmed with them not to come to work for 14 days since the last day of their contact, and started monitoring them for COVID-19, in accordance with guidance by the Public Health Centre.
The University would like to clarify that the infected staff’s working place is the University’s Administrative Bureau, and since he had subjective symptoms (cough, headache and fatigue) on Saturday 22 February, he has had no close contact with students.
6.) Regarding the disinfection of the University Administrative Bureau building
The office room in the administrative bureau where the infected staff works, any facilities, etc. traced by his work style and activity record were all disinfected on Thursday 5 March.
7.) Regarding measures conducted in the University
Referring to the guideline by the Japanese Government, the state of emergency declaration by the Hokkaido Prefectural Government, advices by the infectious disease specialists, etc., the University has set restriction for oversea trips, measures for any infected students, faculties and staff, other initiatives, etc. to reduce the possible spread of COVID-19 infection, and announced them on the University website and through e-mails and SNS for our students, faculties and staff members. Hokkaido University will certainly take required measures up to circumstances, and strive to prevent further spread of infection.
