THE Rankings crowns Hokkaido University as the 6th best Japanese university

The Times Higher Education (THE) Rankings announced the latest report of Japanese university ranking. The ranking is based on an evaluation of four aspects: Resources, Engagement, Outcomes, and Environment. In the 2021 ranking, 278 Japanese universities were evaluated.


This year, Hokkaido University retained the 6th place as the best university in Japan. Out of all categories, Hokkaido University scored the highest in the Outcomes, which is based on the overall academic reputation and the reputation of the university among employers. This puts the university in the 4th place of this category, three places higher than last year.


Worldwide, THE World University Rankings 2021 ranks Hokkaido University in world’s top 501–600 universities. The global ranking looks at 5 different indicators: Teaching, Research, Citations, Industry Income, and International Outlook. Hokkaido University gained score increases in Industry Outcome and International Outlook.


In 2020, Hokkaido University topped the list of Japanese universities in the THE Impact Rankings which assesses the efforts and impacts of higher education establishments in delivering the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
