This transferable skills seminar is targeted at international researchers (Master’s and PhD students, and postdocs). The seminar will be conducted in English.


Learn about how PhD holders are contributing to society as corporate researchers. The lecture will be given by Dr. Ben Johnson, who is based in Singapore and is the Technology Development Manager in Asia for Cambridge Consultants. Cambridge Consultants is a half-century old company specializing in innovative product development engineering and technology consulting. Consultants work from their laboratories in Cambridge, UK, and Boston, USA,and have all the skills needed to help client companies or institutions create an innovative concept. Consultants guide their clients the entire way, from a product’s conception to its manufacturing. Finally, they also help their clients maximize their product portfolio and technology roadmap.


This seminar will cover the following topics, and will include a Q&A afterwards: 

・ History of Industrial Innovation

・ Typical examples of significant innovative products

・ Innovation process in a corporation (from embryonic stage to roll-out)

・ How R&D is conducted in the industry (in-house and outsource)

・ Career as a corporate researcher (in-house and outsource)

・ Introduction of Cambridge Consultants (history, global organization, customers, opportunities, etc.)

・Supports clients in the Asia Pacific region across all their markets.

・Chartered Mechanical Engineer, over four years R&D experience working on next generation low emission engines, including his PhD, which focused on characterizing and controlling crankcase aerosol emissions.
