2nd Global PR Ambassador Meeting Held

The second Hokkaido University Global Public Relations Ambassador (HUPRA) Meeting was held online on July 28, 2026, bringing together 14 ambassadors from Asia and Europe. The meeting provided an opportunity to share updates from Hokkaido University, learn about ambassadors’ recent activities, and exchange ideas for future collaboration.

President Kiyohiro Houkin opened the meeting by expressing his appreciation for the ambassadors’ continued support and presenting an overview of the University’s current status and future vision. He highlighted Hokkaido University’s strengths in sustainability, agriculture, green transformation, and emerging fields such as semiconductor technology. Vice President Atsushi Yokota then introduced the University’s 150th anniversary projects and commemorative events, highlighting preparations for the anniversary celebrations to be held in September as Hokkaido University marks its 150th anniversary this month.

A highlight of the meeting was a presentation of activities by two Global PR Ambassadors. Professor Christofora Hanny Wijaya of IPB University (Indonesia) introduced a wide range of outreach and engagement activities in Indonesia, including alumni reunions and symposiums, participation in education fairs, and a fundraising initiative in support of Hokkaido University’s 150th anniversary.

Professor K. B. M. Saiful Islam of Sher-e Bangla Agricultural University (Bangladesh) also shared his efforts to strengthen the Hokkaido University alumni network in Bangladesh. His activities included helping establish an alumni association, creating online platforms to share the University news, and supporting students interested in exchange or degree programs at Hokkaido University.

The meeting continued with more sharing from Hokkaido University representatives. Nori Miyokawa, Deputy Director of the Office for International Collaboration, presented an overview of the University’s international student recruitment activities. He encouraged the ambassadors to help share information about opportunities to study at Hokkaido University. Naoki Namba, head of the Public Relations & Communications Division, then gave an overview of the HUPRA program and the University’s international public relations activities, highlighting the important role ambassadors play in strengthening Hokkaido University’s global presence.

During the open discussion, ambassadors and University representatives exchanged ideas on international recruitment, public relations, and future collaboration. Suggestions included organizing online information sessions for prospective students, making greater use of the HUPRA LinkedIn group for regular communication, and strengthening cooperation with partner institutions, alumni networks, and local organizations overseas.

In his closing remarks, President Houkin emphasized the increasing importance of attracting talented international students as Japan faces a declining population. He expressed his hope that the HUPRA network would continue helping Hokkaido University connect with prospective students and partners around the world.
