Lulie Melling

Director, Sarawak Tropical Peat Research Institute (TROPI) of Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Research Sarawak

Wow…When I was asked to become an HU Ambassador, I was so honored to be bestowed the trust to carry the flag of Hokkaido University.

I did my PhD on Greenhouse Gas Flux from Tropical Peatland and it had helped me to salvage and support the oil palm industry on tropical peatland. On top of that, my association with Hokkaido University, especially with Prof Ryusuke Hatano and Prof Takashi Hirano, was instrumental in helping to establish the Sarawak Tropical Peat Research Institute and the 3 Eddy Covariance Tower in Sarawak. At the same time, support from Hokkaido University was instrumental in the success of organizing the 15th International Peat Congress in 2016. As of September 2018, the Institute has now 3 PhD graduates from Hokkaido University.

As an HU Ambassador, I generally promote my success as the success story of Hokkaido University. At the same time, I also try to get more Malaysians to do their post-graduate in Hokkaido University and I hope I can do as much as I can to make sure that I can spread the good image of the University.

Being an Asian and as a family of the HU community, it is an obligation for all of us to help each other and to also bring up the younger ones for a better future. We must always use what we have from HU to make the world more sustainable.
