Professor Shin Sugiyama at Hokkaido University’s Institute for Low Temperature Science and Arctic Research Center was awarded the European Geosciences Union (EGU)’s prestigious 2025 Julia and Johannes Weertman Medal on April 29, 2025, during the 2025 EGU Annual Meeting in Vienna.

This medal is awarded to individuals in recognition of their outstanding scientific contributions to the study of the cryosphere on Earth or elsewhere in the solar system. Sugiyama is the first recipient of the medal from outside Europe and the USA since it was established in 2005.

The medal recognizes Sugiyama’s “outstanding work in the field of glacier dynamics and ice-water interactions, including seminal contributions to our understanding of lake-calving glaciers and ice-dammed lake outbursts,” as well as his key contributions to cryosphere research and education over the past two decades.
