The majority of the Sapporo Campus site has archaeological remains lying underground. Before new buildings are constructed on the campus, a survey of the ruins is conducted by the Center. Established in 1980, the Archaeological Research Center at Hokkaido University has investigated over 60 sites within the Sapporo Campus.
Located close to the Hokkaido University Museum, the Center also displays artifacts such as pottery and stone tools that were excavated from the campus’ sites in the Center’s exhibition room. Public events including short lectures on excavation survey results and archaeological tours on campus are regularly held in promoting the understanding of Hokkaido University’s archaeological heritage.
