Professor Shin Sugiyama, Director of the Arctic Research Center at Hokkaido University, has been conducting field surveys in the Arctic Circle for about 10 years. He underlines the importance of listening to the voices of the Indigenous people who live in the harsh natural environment year-round. Based on their testimonies, the investigation revealed a mysterious mechanism by which glaciers affect the ecosystem. Furthermore, changes in the fish species living in the Arctic have been observed, which could potentially be linked to the health status of the residents. The research also uncovered that the warming of the Arctic Circle has a significant impact on the climate in Japan.
