Experimental Forests and Farms

Hokkaido University owns 70,000 hectares of experimental forest which we utilize to elucidate the long-term fluctuation of forest ecosystems. We manage a total of six forests with a greater landmass than the city of Tokyo, as well as a tree breeding station, and tree nursery.

The University Forests range from cool temperate forests to warm temperate forests including one that has the largest field training station at any Japanese university. Our forests are also open to the public for hiking, nature observation and general recreation.
