GSI International Symposium 2023

Event | January 21, 2023

Finished Jan 21 2023 ~ Jan 22 2023

The Global Station for Indigenous Studies and Cultural Diversity (GSI) is pleased to announce the GSI International Symposium 2023 around the theme of “Indigenous Heritage and Research Ethics” online from January 20th through 22nd, 2023. Participation for both January 21st and 22nd is open to all interested persons and institutions.

This year marks the fifteenth anniversary of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and there is growing international discussion about the cultural heritage of Indigenous peoples and their participation in academic research.

Since the founding of the Global Station for Indigenous Studies and Cultural Diversity (GSI) in April 2021, we have been working to create a center for international Indigenous research by inviting researchers from abroad to Hokkaido University. We hope that this symposium will become an opportunity to discuss the current situation and issues surrounding indigenous cultural heritage with leading researchers working on Indigenous studies at overseas institutions and with professors of an indigenous community, and to consider how overseas initiatives can be used to promote the cultural heritage of the Ainu people in Hokkaido.
