Sport and Recreation


Hokkaido University has a wide range of high quality sports facilities for students to utilize to keep fit and stay healthy. The largest sports facility on campus is located just north of the Institute for International Collaboration. This complex consists of two large gymnasiums, a smaller gymnasium, an indoor athletic field with artificial grass, a swimming pool and a martial arts training hall.  While the sport facilities are mainly used for curricular and extracurricular activities, they are still open to students, faculty, and staff.


The university also has a large range of outdoor facilities available for use: 2 baseball grounds, an athletic track and field, soccer/rugby grounds, hockey/handball grounds, 4 artificial grass tennis courts in the north, as well as 3 artificial grass tennis courts and 3 clay tennis courts to the south.

Sports Training Center

Size:

Facilities:

4 treadmills, 3 exercise bikes, 10 rowing machines, weight machines, free weights (including squat and power racks, weight lifting benches, etc.), changing rooms, shower rooms, lockers

 

Opening hours to faculty, staff, and students:

Weekdays: 7:00-22:00

Weekends and holidays: 9:00-22:00


Note on using the facility:

Bring your own towel and indoor shoes. Please also note that the facility may be shut at times for events, classes, etc. The training center’s calendar can be accessed here (in Japanese only).



 

Gymnasium Building 1

Size:

1,456.7 m2


Facilities:

2 basketball courts, 2 volleyball courts, 8 badminton courts, 2 tennis courts, 18 table tennis tables



 

Gymnasium Building 2

Size:

1,496 m2


Facilities:

2 basketball courts, 2 volleyball courts, 8 badminton courts, 1 handball court


Procedure to use the facility:

Applications for the following month are accepted at the Student Center Office for Extracurricular Activities (Circle Kaikan Building) on the 20th day of every month (the following Monday if the 20th is a Sunday, Saturday or public holiday). If there are many applicants, a lottery is held at 9:30. Groups (those selected in the case of a lottery) are required to hand in a usage application form at the actual venue. A permit to use the facility is then handed out shortly afterwards.

 

Note on using the facility:

One group can use half of the floor for up to 70 minutes between 18:10 and 21:40 on Mondays and Thursdays



 

Small Gymnasium

Size:

395.14 m2


Facilities:

Multipurpose space for dance, table tennis, etc.



 

Indoor Athletic Field

Size:

1,828 m2


Facilities:

50m straight running track, 2 pitching mounds


Procedure to use the facility:

Applications for the following month are accepted at the Student Center Office for Extracurricular Activities (Circle Kaikan Building) on the 20th day of every month (the following Monday if the 20th is a Sunday, a Saturday or a public holiday). If there are many applicants, a lottery takes place at 9:30. Groups (those selected in the case of a lottery) are required to hand in a usage application form at the actual venue. A permit to use the facility is then handed out shortly afterwards.

 

Note on using the facility:

One group can use the floor (excluding the pitching mound) for up to 70 minutes between 18:10 and 21:40 on Thursdays.



 

Swimming Pool

Size:

7 lanes, 25m


Facilities:

Changing/shower rooms and toilets


Procedure to use the facility:

Please write your name and the time you enter and leave the pool on the roll sheet provided at the entrance of the pool. Before using the pool, be sure to read this rules and regulations document.



 

North Tennis Courts

Opening hours to faculty, staff, and students:

Individuals may book between 06:00 to 08:30 and when there are no regular courses over the summer (May to October)

 

Procedure to use the facility:

Applications for the following month are accepted at the Student Center Office for Extracurricular Activities (Institute for Higher Education Counter #3) on the 20th day of every month (the following Monday if the 20th is a Sunday, a Saturday or a public holiday). A calendar of available dates and times is issued with which you select the times you wish you use the courts. A permit is issued to you when the center arranges a formal schedule after processing all the applications.



 

Baseball Grounds

Opening hours to faculty, staff, and students:

From sunrise to 8:30 and when there are no regular courses or practice sessions by certified groups in the summer (May to October)


Procedure to use the facility:

Applications for the following month are accepted at the Student Center Office for Extracurricular Activities (Institute for Higher Education Counter #3) on the 20th day of every month (the following Monday if the 20th is a Sunday, a Saturday or a public holiday). A calendar of available dates and times is issued with which you select the times you wish you use the field. A permit is issued to you when the center arranges a formal schedule after processing all the applications.



 

Martial Arts Training Hall
