University News | November 25, 2024

Hokkaido University and University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass Amherst, UMA) have established the HU-UMA Joint Research Seed Fund and are pleased to announce its very first round of FY 2025-2026 as the following.

UMass Amherst is renowned for cutting-edge research aimed at eradicating diseases, addressing climate change, alleviating poverty, and developing innovative solutions to some of the world’s most complex problems. Their staff includes a Nobel laureate, Pulitzer Prize winners, members of the National Academy of Sciences, an American Book Award winner and Fulbright, Guggenheim, MacArthur and Mellon Fellows. Each year UMass Amherst has more than a dozen faculty members on Clarivate Analytics’ list of ‘Highly Cited Researchers,’ a list of the top 1% of researchers around the world in science.

Based on its long-lasting partnership over 140 years, the two institutions have agreed to deepen the bond of relationship as a Strategic International Partnership, and launch said Fund to cultivate research collaboration seeds in the areas of common interests: Advanced Materials, Applied Life Science, Renewable Agriculture, Sustainability, and Humanities and Societies. HU’s Professor Tsuyoshi Setoguchi, Executive Vice President for Research, said that he is “thrilled to announce this call which will further develop and strengthen the partnership between Hokkaido University and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The seed funding is designed to scope future research collaborations in areas of strength for both universities. This funding builds on the longest partnership for Hokkaido and will facilitate researchers to engage an international environment and provide them with global dimensions to key research topics, not only with our historical legacy but with common ambition to widely share academic expertise”. The two universities were started as Sapporo and Massachusetts Agricultural Colleges in the 19th century, and which were cultivated by Dr. William Smith Clark, the first Vice President of SAC and the third President of MAC.

The seed funding is to support faculties of the two universities to initiate research collaborations via research visits or events, yet still to welcome existing collaborators to strengthen the unity of research teams via submitting joint papers or organizing joint sessions on academic conferences with the Fund.
