National Health Insurance

Hokkaido University international students planning to reside in Japan for more than 3 months are required to enroll in the National Health Insurance system. This insurance covers 70% of charges for medical care and hospitalization. If monthly medical fees add up to a large sum, there is a cap on the total amount that you have to pay. However, some dental procedures and also varying kinds of treatment at hospitals may not be covered, so be sure to inquire at the hospital beforehand.

Family members can also enroll in this insurance program, and about 70% of medical costs are also covered for family members.

How to obtain National Health Insurance:

Please enroll at the ward office or city hall when you register your address details immediately after arriving in Japan. Generally, international students can ask for a 20%~70% reduction of the premium. The reduction varies depending on local government rules and individual income. Therefore, be sure to apply for this reduction when you enroll in the insurance. After you enroll a bill will be mailed to you, and you can pay at a bank or alternatively, you can also arrange for the fee to be automatically deducted from your bank account.
