Akira SUZUKI | 2010 | Professor Emeritus | For his work on the cross-coupling reaction of organic boron compounds using palladium as a catalyst. He reported this work in 1979 which had a massive impact on catalytic chemistry and material science, as well as organic synthetic chemistry. Since then Suzuki has developed a new research topic globally recognized as the ‘Suzuki Coupling Reaction.’ It is for this achievement that he is being awarded the prize. The reaction allows extensive universality and practicality, and has been used for the synthesis of many biologically active natural products, including pharmaceutical preparations. |
Benjamin LIST | 2021 | Specially Appointed Professor (ICReDD) | (Shared with Dr. David W. C. MacMillan of Princeton University) for the development of asymmetric organocatalysis. Their development of small molecule catalysts that are simple in structure, easy to handle and more environmentally friendly than conventional catalysts has advanced the manufacture and development of a wide range of industrial products, from pharmaceuticals to solar cell components. |
Recipients of the Order of Culture
The prestigious Order of Culture Prize was established in 1937. This order is awarded to persons that have contributed to Japan’s art, literature, or culture. The order is conferred by the Emperor of Japan in person on Culture Day on November 3 each year.
